1792 single barrel vs bottled in bond

Written by

Nose:  Fairly subdued and sleepy, at least initially. Enjoyable overall. This is a really solid bourbon that admirably competes in its price range with the likes of Four Roses Single Barrel and Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit for the more spice-forward bourbon slot in your cabinet.

1792 Bottled in Bond typically retails in the $30-$40 range. This one is, and it serves to showcase what the distillery can do along with highlighting a significant milestone for the industry, and our country as a whole - the Bottled in Bond Act of 1897. The bourbon in review is from the fall 2017 release. After a good 15-20 minutes in the glass it’s woken up a bit to reveal a balanced display of rich caramel and toasted oak that’s verging towards wood varnish. In fact, Barton makes two very similar products - 1792 Small Batch and Very Old Barton Bottled In Bond. The Very Old Barton was the most potent and also most rough around the edges, but with that it also demonstrated the most character. Medium to long lasting. Considering the fact that Barton only plans to release it once a year in the fall, I would assume it will serve to showcase particular batches, by distillation season of course, that they feel offer something a bit more special than their standard Small Batch release. This whiskey presents with a creamy mouthfeel and plenty of those same rich caramel and vanilla notes. Very rich and balanced. Bardstown’s Barton Distillery has released a flurry of new bourbons under their 1792 label, with the Bottled in Bond becoming the newest release when it debuted in the Fall of 2017.

Luke has an unwavering love for bourbon and rye whiskey. 1792 Bottled In Bond Single Barrel $39.99 In 1897, the Bottled-in-Bond Act revolutionized the quality of American whiskey. Rye spice, vanilla, and caramel are most prominent with a trace of oak underneath. In fact, Barton makes two very similar products - 1792 Small Batch and Very Old Barton Bottled In Bond. If the folks at Barton are listening, it would be really nice to see some more information on the label - the age, distillation season, where exactly it was aged in the rickhouse, etc.

forms : { Most notably, the three were only marginally different, and I think all things considered it would come down to merely personal preference in deciding which was the favorite. } Released: One batch will be released each fall, beginning in 2017, Mashbill: Undisclosed (Marketed as “High rye,” and believed to be 15-25% rye). It’s great to see them releasing a new Bottled in Bond bourbon, but considering it’s so similar to their existing products, and at a much higher price by comparison, it’s easy to dismiss it.

if (!window.mc4wp) { Falling in line behind these are rye spices (clove, allspice), pipe tobacco, and hints of praline and leather. Rye spice mingles with caramel and vanilla creating a flavor profile that’s easily alluded to based on the aroma. Buying Recommendation: Must Try!

This bottled in bond release from Barton 1792 was first released in the Fall of 2017 as the distillery continued to expand its portfolio of annual release whiskey.

There is also no age statement on this bottle but since it is bottled in bond we know it is at least 4 years old.

Carrying on that custom, this well-aged whiskey from barrels all filled during the same season was packaged at precisely 100 proof for an intense taste and waiting completion – a demonstration of the Bottled-in-Bond Act built up finished a century prior. Made under the standards of the late 19th Century Bottled in Bond Act, the whiskey was made in a single distillery season at Barton 1792, aged in a bonded for at least four years, Federally-supervised warehouse and bottled at 100 proof. The distilling building itself is tall and brooding, with its weather-worn brick exterior reminding one more of a 19th century industrial factory than anything else. It once came with a 6 year age statement but that has been removed in favor of a no age statement (NAS) version. To draw a comparison to 1792 Bottled in Bond, you don’t need to look very far. While the standard bourbon mash bill that Barton uses is only officially advertised as being higher in rye content, reputable sources put the mash at 15% rye for the standard bourbon. Once again, there is not alot of depth and complexity here, but the flavors that are present balance nicely. Also made at Heaven Hill, Henry McKenna 10 year old went from sleeper to spotlight after receiving heightened attention in 2019. This is further accentuated by some seasoned oak, which provides a nice balance to the sweeter notes. The average shelf price skyrocketed to around $85, nearly 3 times the price Heaven Hill suggests. A very light amount of ethanol blends nicely with rich caramel, heavy vanilla, and plenty of rye spice, all of which is underscored by a soft oak note. Alongside the 1792 brand, Barton also produces bourbon for the the Very Old Barton, Kentucky Tavern, Chestnut Farms and Tom Moore brands, and contract distills for at least a handful of non-distilling producers (allegedly of course, due to nondisclosure agreements).

Depending how you look at it Barton could receive accolades or criticism for this release. 1792 Bottled in Bond kind of split the difference. The brand’s Small Batch bourbon had existed ever since Sazerac had acquired the distillery in 2009, but between 2015 and 2016, five new labels were released: Port Finish, Sweet Wheat, High Rye, Full Proof and Single Barrel. The mash bill for this release is not disclosed but it is described as a high rye bourbon, which is believed to be in the 15-25% range. 1792 Small Batch is Barton’s flagship product, released year round and easily accessible. #mc_embed_signup{background:#fff; clear:left; font:14px Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif; } Both labels require a minimum age of 4 years, and while the Bottled In Bond must be the product of one distillation season we can’t say with certainty Small Batch isn’t. callback: callback (function() { Palate:  The arrival is silky and medium-bodied with vanilla and rye spice leading the way, before a bold barrage of allspice, hazelnuts, caramel cream, and oak take over. With that in mind, however, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to believe barrels of varying ages (and as a result distillation seasons) are mingled together to create Small Batch. Finish:  Equal parts sweet and dry, with the rye spice and oak being most prominent alongside a touch of sweet caramel. There’s no reason to believe the Bottled in Bond is any different, but I’ll leave the mash bill numbers out of the notes for the sake of things (is it that hard to just fall in line with the majority of the industry and publicly state your mash bill?). Due to its lower proof 1792 Small Batch was the least potent, but not by much. window.mc4wp = { You can follow Luke's personal bourbon blog at www.capitalcitybourbon.com or on Instagram @capitalcitybourbon. It offered more potency and spice than 1792 Small Batch, but wasn’t quite as potent and rough around the edges as Very Old Barton. Along with it’s standard Small Batch and Single Barrel, the 1792 label now has “High Rye”, “Sweet Wheat”, “Port Finish” and “Full Proof” editions, alongside this new bottled in bond bourbon which is slated to be an annual Fall release going forward. The finish is medium-long and characterized by the same caramel/vanilla/spice profile that is present throughout the sip.

The sip ends nicely with rye spice and seasoned oak dominating the start of the finish. }); It’s not quite as chewy as compared to 1792 Small Batch, but it does have a nice mouthfeel overall. All considered, it’s still only $36 and at that price I’m not looking for magic - a little different than what else is out there is good enough as long as it’s a decent bourbon.
