The main character is a weak-willed, rather pathetic sort of person, who eves drops on others, follows them, and insinuates herself into a family that is not hers and takes on an odd, unnatural relationship with each one. Loved this story of a family's secrets being discovered by the housekeeper, who, with no family of her own, got a little too close to her employers.
I think she found out when she bumped into her as she was leaving the house after she was fired. Her more recent book The Memory Police was definitely a big leap forward both in concept and in writing. The main character is 24, but the narrator made her sound like a 45-year-old. A stunning first novel, both literary and thriller, about a retired surgeon with dementia who clings to bits of reality through anger, frustration, shame and unspeakable loss. Anne takes over and becomes their helpmate, support and as they keep telling her, a much loved part of the family. I had just read The Accident by this author and after giving it 5 stars looked for more of her work. But this was very enjoyable in its own way. Which is why when Hannah advertises for a housekeeper, Claire is confident she can apply and not be recognized. I'm not sure if there is some deep significance to this or if Ogawa simply wanted to interlace the book with this particular prime number. Except that it's not just Claire who has secrets. It's taken alot of effort to be this miserable. The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery (labfs39, chrisharpe) labfs39: Both have incredibly well-drawn, quirky characters that are lovable in their unique humaness.Both have highly intelligent characters that are vulnerable because of their very gift. You will be shocked, but that's just what makes this book so good! But a shocking very public betrayal changes this and she realises that all she has really been to the family is a housekeeper with a messy past paid to pick up after their messes and keep their messy little secrets.

After accepting, settling in, and falling in love with this family... secrets get uncovered. The protagonist, Claire, is a 24-year-old, very unlikeable and struggling young adult. You tell me. She is deceitful, manipulative, callous but also snarky and snide, which adds a nice humorous tone to the book. Claire is the star of this one and has been harboring deep resentment against a classmate she felt wronged her family.
